Tracking e-commerce design is a daily practice for thousands of teams in the industry. Yet it often remains a solitary task, locked in personal bookmarks and shared folders that no one can find anymore.

But that can change!

## Design research: invisible work

Some professional practices get passed down without anyone really teaching them, and looking at what others are doing is one of them.

Everyone who works in e-commerce spends a significant amount of time browsing sites, spotting what interests them, and archiving the references that speak to them. Designers feed their sensibility, project managers build their benchmarks, and marketing teams draw inspiration from what they see elsewhere.

**This habit is so common that we barely give it a name anymore.**

It's simply a way to stay alert to what's out there and calibrate your sense of good work. In practice, this research is often a homemade affair: a Slack channel for inspiration where links pile up and vanish, a Drive folder no one can find anymore, a personal bookmark list that an employee takes with them when they change jobs.

---

> The knowledge stays individual and hard to build on as a team.

---

When it's time for a benchmark or a redesign, teams rebuild this collection work from scratch, unable to rely on what they've already gathered.

> **Curation and inspiration tools already exist, but each has its own positioning.**

Pinterest is built for visual discovery and image curation, with a feed logic that serves different uses than tracking an e-commerce site as a whole. Awwwards rewards the experimental and the spectacular, focusing more on formal exploration than on commercial stakes. The theme galleries of e-commerce platforms exist first and foremost to sell templates.

**E-commerce design research deserves a place truly built for it, with its own codes, its own segments, its own logic.**

Our article on [Polène, Rains and Jacquemus](https://conversion.club/polene-rains-jacquemus-three-ways-to-break-e-commerce-conventions-through-design/) shows how e-commerce design is a discipline in its own right, one that calls for tailored references and benchmarks.

## A directory for e-commerce design research

[Commerce.design](http://commerce.design/?ref=conversion.club) is a directory of e-commerce sites, documented and organized for design research.

The platform now lists more than 300 sites from around the world. Each comes with desktop and mobile screenshots, an automatically extracted color palette, and tags by segment and style.

Navigation is built around research: you can browse the directory by themed collection, filter by dominant color, or search within a specific segment.

Preview of a site in desktop AND mobile versions

We chose to systematically capture both formats, desktop and mobile, because e-commerce teams know that the mobile and desktop experiences can tell two very different stories on the same site. Seeing them side by side gives a much more accurate picture of what a site is really like.

This side-by-side view echoes what we regularly document on Conversion Club: [visuals are always the first driver of conversion](https://conversion.club/your-visuals-will-always-be-your-biggest-conversion-driver/), and their quality is measured across every screen where users encounter them.

Sites are organized into themed collections curated by the community and built around distinct visual approaches: Minimal Masters, All Black Everything, Color Maximalism, Fashion Forward, Luxury Online, Mobile Excellence, Typography-Led, Brutalist Commerce, Craft & Artisan, Sports & Performance.

Each collection is a way into a particular aesthetic world. You can see how very different brands work within the same style, calibrate a creative direction, or document a design choice.

For a team preparing a brief or working on a redesign, it's a place to go early, to set a shared frame of reference before the meetings begin.

## A directory that grows with you

[Commerce.design](http://commerce.design/?ref=conversion.club) is free and open to contributions.

Anyone can submit a site they admire through a simple form, and this contributory nature is what makes the platform alive and useful.

E-commerce design moves fast. Trends change, and brands that set the standard a few years ago are replaced by new entrants.

---

> **Only a living directory, fed by the community, can keep up with that pace and stay relevant.**

---

By opening submissions to everyone, the platform builds on the research that hundreds of teams already do, each on their own, and turns that scattered work into something collective.

![Commerce.design: "Send links" form for suggesting a site](https://storage.ghost.io/c/b5/a7/b5a79c8d-ed77-4459-9729-b694bd04720c/content/images/2026/10/Capture-du-07-07-2026-a---10.49.13.png)

Send links!

Creating an account lets you build **your own personal collections**, **save references** and **share them with your team**. For agencies and e-commerce teams working on redesign projects, it's a practical way to centralize relevant references and work from the same sources, right when they're needed.

💐 The platform is free to use at [commerce.design](http://commerce.design/?ref=conversion.club).
