AI shopping changes one practical part of holiday preparation: product data and delivery information must be accurate wherever discovery systems read them. Keep the feed, page, structured data and checkout consistent. A holiday banner alone is an unreliable source for a machine-readable price, stock status or order cutoff.

## The benchmark

The source distinguishes autonomous purchasing from AI-assisted discovery. Visa's December 2025 forecast of millions of agent-assisted shoppers by the 2026 holidays followed only hundreds of transactions. Its July 2026 announcement described live European purchases at participating merchants. A forecast and a selected production deployment measure different things; neither establishes widespread delegated purchasing at your store.

A fashion account reported by the contributors had 174 products accessible through Shopify's AI discovery and €255 in attributed agent-related sales over 30 days. That is a modest account observation, not a forecast for holiday revenue. For many merchants, the immediate job is accurate comparison and referral to the store. Shopify's current ChatGPT channel uses the merchant's checkout rather than generally available native ChatGPT checkout.

| Information | Operational source to inspect |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Price and stock | Product feed, page, structured data and live checkout |
| Delivery timing | Merchant Center shipping settings and accurate store policies |
| Working days and holidays | Destination/service calendars and fulfillment settings |
| Promotions | Sale-price fields, effective periods where supported and synchronized checkout rules |

OpenAI’s current product-feed specification distinguishes supported shipping charges from delivery-date guarantees and says shipping support depends on the feed setup. Do not append unsupported handling/transit fields or assume that providing a shipping charge guarantees arrival. Google and OpenAI do not necessarily accept the same fields or schedule promotions in the same way.

## The rule

Put critical facts in the supported structured fields and clear text as well as shopper-facing creative. Avoid the source's absolute claim that agents never read images or execute scripts: capabilities vary. The operational point remains that an image-only guarantee or browser-only discount may not reach the feed or structured data used by another system.

At peak demand, stale availability can recommend a sold-out size. The source describes an apparel feed with material present only in prose and variants incorrectly merged. Fix catalog identity and variant data before trying to optimize an assistant's answer. See [catalog preparation](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-i-get-my-catalog-ready-for-purchases-through-chatgpt-and-google/).

A correct feed does not guarantee immediate reprocessing or accurate answers. You still need to inspect ingestion errors and test the output rather than assuming a successful export means every service has refreshed it.

## The steps

1. Set a feed-refresh cadence for the actual campaign period in each market. The source recommends at least daily updates and event-driven updates for stock changes where supported. Frequent changes need a suitable feed/API pipeline; automatic item updates are a backstop, not a replacement for accurate primary data.
2. Synchronize variants immediately when stock changes. Check the page, feed and checkout agree. Use the [out-of-stock page method](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-should-you-show-when-a-size-or-product-is-out-of-stock/) for the customer experience while correcting the data source.
3. Populate supported shipping settings: order cutoff time, handling and transit. Use destination-specific working days and carrier confirmation. The source's French-holiday treatment should not be applied globally. Write the [holiday order cutoff](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-christmas-order-deadline-should-you-display/) in accessible policy and product text, with the relevant service, country and time zone.
4. Bound promotions in supported fields. Google's `sale_price_effective_date` uses an interval with time-zone information; the source's French-offset example is not the right offset for every market. Where a feed cannot schedule a change, arrange updates at the actual start and end. Check discounts applied by apps against JSON-LD, feed and checkout. Remove obsolete reference prices and [review local reduction rules](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-does-the-law-say-about-strikethrough-prices/).
5. Rehearse before launch. Ask realistic questions about three important products: price, exact variant, availability and arrival before the local gift date. Record assistant, query, market and test time, then compare answers with the store's current reality. Add defects to the [site-freeze checklist](https://conversion.club/playbook/which-site-settings-to-freeze-before-black-friday/).

## The pitfall

The visible campaign can be ready while data is a day behind. That sends shoppers from a quoted offer to a contradictory product page. The source reports an outdoor brand reprioritizing a feed issue that had remained unresolved after migration to Shopify. Peak season exposed an existing operational weakness; the AI channel did not create it.

Do not turn a chatbot test into a delivery guarantee. The source of truth remains the confirmed fulfillment service and current store promise. Assign someone to check the end of an offer as carefully as its beginning.

## What to tell your team

> “In this fictional December plan, assistants already refer 4% of visits. We will update stock in the supported feed pipeline, publish market-specific order cutoffs in text and test our three main products before launch. We will report observed discrepancies rather than promise AI visibility.”
