It helps where price is the blocker, so mostly on high-value carts. Its most consistent effect is on cart value, more than on the number of orders.

And it has a cost: a fee on every order that uses it.

---

## The benchmark

Look at the share of orders paid in installments in your own store, by cart-value bracket. If it's high above €150 and marginal below, you know where it works. Also compare the average cart value of these orders with the rest.

And don't judge it on clicks. At a footwear brand the authors work with, with a product around €120, we tested the message "or 3x interest-free" in the buy area of the product page, across 46,000 visits. Add-to-carts rose 4%, though the result wasn't conclusive; orders didn't move; revenue per visit dipped slightly.

On mobile, the message attracted shoppers; on desktop, it put them off. We expected the message to help; at this price, it mostly drew curious visitors who weren't ready to buy yet.

Installments shift clicks where the monthly amount doesn't change the decision.

---

## The rule

Offer it from the amount where a monthly payment makes sense, and show the [monthly payment right on the product page](https://conversion.club/how-to-optimize-an-e-commerce-product-page-the-complete-audit/) for the items concerned.

A consultant on our team put it this way during an audit:

> "The first question you ask yourself when you hear pay in three installments is available is: how much is that per month? My salary lands every month. If you install the widget, you'll have written "in three monthly payments of 85 euros.""

Below the useful amount, it only costs you: at a 3.60% fee, the public rate of the most common provider in France, the threshold sits around a €100 cart, to be recalculated with your [contribution margin](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-you-calculate-the-contribution-margin-of-an-order/).

---

## The steps

1. The fee. Check the one in your contract, and who bears the risk of unpaid orders: specialized providers pay you in full and carry it; some offers built into a payment provider re-charge the card at each installment, with no guarantee.
2. Usage. Measure it by cart-value bracket over three months.
3. The threshold. Set a display threshold and test it on orders, not on add-to-carts.
4. The margin. Calculate it for these orders, after the fee.
5. The date. On [November 20, 2026](https://conversion.club/tomy-ferreira-payplug-at-best-payment-is-a-badly-framed-topic/), installment payment becomes consumer credit: creditworthiness check, pre-contractual information, right of withdrawal. Then watch the acceptance rate and the shift to card payment.

A line to tell your leadership, to use with your own numbers:

> "At 3.60%, pay in three costs us €3.60 per €100\. It only pays off above a certain amount, and we judge it on orders, never on clicks."

---

## The trap

The trap is the shopper who would have paid upfront and picks three installments because it's offered. For them, you pay a fee without having gained a sale. If installments become common on your small carts, you pay a fee for a convenience the sale didn't require.

Be wary of providers' numbers too: an "average cart +80%" describes the orders that chose installments, meaning the makeup of the customer base, not the effect of the option.

And the most common display mistake is to [show installments only in the cart](https://conversion.club/optimizing-e-commerce-checkout-the-complete-audit/), once the price is accepted, when the decision is made next to the price, on the product page.
