Expect a few thousand euros for an [expert review of a few pages](https://conversion.club/how-to-optimize-an-e-commerce-product-page-the-complete-audit/), and more for a study that combines data, session recordings and customer interviews.

The price depends on four things: scope, depth of analysis, the state of your data and what's planned after delivery. That last line is often the first one cut during negotiation, yet it's what makes the audit pay off.

## The benchmark

Before you look at market rates, [calculate what the audit needs to earn you](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-much-should-you-spend-on-site-optimization-at-5m-10m-and-20m-in-sales/). If the first ten fixes lift your [revenue per visit](https://conversion.club/playbook/should-you-steer-by-revenue-per-visit-instead-of-conversion-rate/) by 3%, how much margin does that add up to over a year?

That figure tells you whether a quote is expensive.

## What drives the quote

Of the four factors, the state of your data is the one a proposal spells out the least. [An audit starts by reading your numbers](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-should-you-audit-before-a-shopify-redesign/), and [when the tracking is wrong](https://conversion.club/playbook/shopify-or-ga4-which-number-should-you-show-leadership/), it has to be fixed first.

In a recent proposal, we had budgeted 30 to 50 hours to make the data reliable before the first recommendation: the brand's analytics tool showed a checkout completion rate of 130%.

I fell for it myself. I had promised a first recommendations memo by Friday to a brand with several million euros in revenue and tens of thousands of euros a month in ad spend, convinced that at that level the tracking was bound to be clean.

When I opened its analytics, I found almost no usable data, and I wondered what on earth I was going to write in the Friday memo.

## The rule

Pay for evidence, for a priority order and for what comes next.

The [checklist we published](https://conversion.club/e-commerce-cro-checklist-194-checkpoints-to-audit-your-store/) has 194 checkpoints, and it only becomes useful once each one is scored by impact and cost: that leaves [about thirty to tackle first](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-you-build-an-e-commerce-roadmap/).

---

## The steps

1. Scope. List the pages, markets and devices covered.
2. Evidence. Ask what data each recommendation will rest on, and who will check the tracking first.
3. Ranking. Require an order based on expected impact and effort.
4. Post-audit. Ask who will implement, how many days are budgeted to do it and how the impact will be measured.
5. Comparison. [Compare quotes on these four points](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-to-write-an-agency-brief/) before comparing prices.

## The trap

The free audit is a sales document, designed to sell what comes next. We sell audits and their implementation ourselves, so keep that bias in mind as you read on.

A costlier trap awaits in the negotiation of a paid audit. At the debrief of an accessibility audit, the vendor's lead described what had happened:

> "we had planned a very specific line item for handling the post-audit phase, because it's normal to have things to revisit after an audit, that's the whole point of an audit."

The client organization had asked to remove it, "[because there was no budget](https://conversion.club/playbook/does-your-e-commerce-site-have-to-meet-accessibility-requirements/)."

In our view, that line is the most tempting one to cut, since the report keeps its thickness when the price drops. But then nobody gets paid to turn findings into fixes.

And an audit goes stale fast: its value comes from the first ten actions completed within three months of delivery.

## The math to present

Take a hypothetical example: a store with €1 million in online sales and a 50% margin rate.

If revenue per visit grows 3%, it brings in an extra €30,000 in sales over a year, or about €15,000 in margin.

Copy this, then rewrite it with your own numbers for your leadership team:

> "The audit costs €5,000\. If its first ten actions lift our revenue per visit by 3%, it earns about €15,000 in margin per year, provided we book the implementation days for the following three months right now."
