Private sales can reward loyalty through time rather than a deeper discount: let selected customers buy hours or days before the public at the same campaign price. Early access can improve access to sizes and colors without automatically giving away more margin. Keep eligibility real and measure the result against comparable customers.

## The benchmark

A private sale targets an identified group. The commercial promise should specify who qualifies, when access begins and whether members receive a lower price or simply earlier access. Those are different benefits and should not be blurred in the announcement.

Establish the actual offer’s treatment under the relevant local price-advertising rules before relying on a membership exception. For relevant EU reduction claims, the English CJEU prior-price ruling is useful background, but it does not itself establish an exemption for a particular loyalty offer. A hidden page or a “personal” label is not a substitute for checking actual access.

| Offer structure | What to establish before advertising |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Genuinely restricted member offer | Who qualifies, how access is verified, and the local reference-price treatment |
| “Personal” code available to everyone | Whether the promotion is effectively public despite its label |
| Public phase following early access | Applicable prior-price calculation, including the earlier offer where required |

Have the responsible owner record the offer’s eligibility, price history and legal classification before launch. Keep the public phase and restricted phase distinguishable in both the configuration and the customer message.

For commercial context, Modern Retail reported in November 2023 that Walmart+ members received three hours' early access and Alo Yoga offered three days. These are dated US examples reported by that publication, not current program terms. A French outdoor brand observed by the authors planned VIP access on the 13th and public access on the 20th. None of these timings proves which window suits another brand.

## The rule

Reward priority before increasing the discount. Someone who has already purchased three times may have bought during the public promotion anyway; an extra 10% can subsidize an existing intention. That is a cannibalization hypothesis to measure, not certainty about every repeat buyer. Early access instead offers a better chance of finding the desired size and color.

Enforce eligibility at redemption. A hidden page with a discount accepted for every shopper is not genuinely restricted. The source cites Shopify's August 2025 introduction of customer eligibility for automatic discounts; confirm current segment and identification behavior in your account. The setting can control access, but it does not itself establish legal exemption.

Define loyalty through recency and frequency. One order in 2021 alone tells you little about current engagement. Match the definition to your product's natural repurchase cycle rather than selecting an arbitrary recent window.

## The steps

1. **Define the segment and control.** Combine minimum order count and recent purchase using the [repeat-purchase framework](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-i-calculate-my-repurchase-rate/). Consider excluding very recent full-price purchasers from a discount offer or providing a fair support policy. Randomly retain a comparable control group where feasible.
2. **Plan access waves.** Consider top [loyalty tiers](https://conversion.club/playbook/is-a-loyalty-program-profitable-for-my-brand/), other members, the email audience and then the public. Protect iconic products where appropriate. Cost any gift, free shipping or limited clearance benefit with the [promotion-profitability model](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-does-a-promotion-really-earn-you-margin-included/).
3. **Test the restriction.** Configure customer-segment eligibility and the necessary identification or [account journey](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-is-the-customer-account-for/). Place an order with an ineligible account before announcing the offer, then test an eligible one. Do not assume a hidden URL protects the price.
4. **Explain the benefit accurately.** “Early access” or “Member preview” describes priority without implying a deeper cut. A fictional cart message is “Your member saving: $32.” The amount is a fictional US-dollar example; apply [reference-price rules](https://conversion.club/playbook/what-does-the-law-say-about-strikethrough-prices/) only within their relevant jurisdictions.
5. **Plan scarce inventory.** Check whether key sizes can survive until public opening. If access is first-come, communicate that honestly rather than promising availability. Early access changes allocation as well as timing.
6. **Measure contribution and later buying.** Compare real 30-day margin after shipping, gifts and returns, then subsequent purchases over a period such as two months. Retain the control comparison; repeat purchase by itself does not prove the offer created loyalty.

## The pitfall

Stacking a member reduction on top of the public offer can grant the deepest discounts to customers most likely to buy anyway. Audit the actual combined saving before launch.

Generic codes can also escape their intended audience. A niche fragrance brand reported scrapers publishing its Shopify codes online, then restricted them to customer segments. Decide who receives each benefit and when in the [commercial calendar](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-to-build-a-promotional-calendar-without-betting-everything-on-discounts/). A leaked code should not silently turn a restricted operation into a permanent public discount.

## What to tell your team

> “Last year, 2,000 loyal customers received 10% more than the public offer, costing roughly $18,000 in margin. This year we propose 24 hours' priority at the public campaign price, compared with a 300-customer control.” All figures are fictional; evaluate the actual incremental contribution.
