- Description: Separate fraud from delivery and refund disputes. Check local provider fees, review risk before shipping and build evidence matched to each dispute reason.

A chargeback can remove the disputed payment and add fees, operational work and product loss. The price depends on the provider, country, account and response route; check your current contract instead of applying French fees worldwide. Separate payment fraud from commercial disputes: they require different prevention and evidence.

## The benchmark

A provider’s dispute record is the right starting point for prevention. Classify the cardholder’s reason and investigate the supporting order history before choosing a response. Aggregate fraud statistics from another population do not establish your store’s dispute mix or the percentage of transactions that will be lost.

| Issue | Typical cardholder statement | Useful prevention/evidence |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Unauthorized-payment fraud | “I did not make this purchase” | Appropriate authentication and risk review |
| Commercial dispute | “It never arrived,” “It was not as described,” “I was not refunded” | Delivery proof, accurate product terms and prompt refund handling |
| 3D Secure effect | Can support fraud liability shift in qualifying cases | Does not resolve delivery, quality or refund disputes |

Do not confuse a consumer's legal notification period with your response deadline. Consumer notification rights, card-network filing rules and the merchant’s evidence deadline are different concepts and can vary by jurisdiction and provider. Shopify's English process documentation, independently opened October 29, 2026, describes a typical seven-to-21-day evidence response period. The actual case deadline controls.

An independent October 29, 2026 check confirms the source’s French standard-fee examples: €15 for Shopify Payments, returned on a win, and €20 for receiving a Stripe dispute plus another €20 for a manual response, with the response fee refundable after a win. These are country-specific published examples, not global pricing or a quote for a negotiated account. Verify whether your provider charges for receipt, response and other resolution services, and what is refundable.

## The rule

Review fraud before fulfillment, using the provider's risk signals and appropriate authentication. Investigate or cancel genuinely suspect orders before the goods leave. A commercial dispute often arrives later, after an unclear promise, missed delivery or slow refund has exhausted the shopper's patience.

Count losses that never become formal chargebacks. A premium fragrance brand's finance director described both chargebacks and support refunds issued because the team expected to lose a dispute. Tag those preventive refunds and include them in monthly loss reporting. Lower formal chargebacks are not necessarily better economics if preemptive refunds rise unobserved.

3D Secure is not blanket insurance. Stripe's cited documentation describes possible liability shift for authenticated fraud disputes with qualifications, and inquiries can still require a response. “Item not received” needs relevant delivery evidence.

Follow the rate your provider and card networks actually use. The source describes Shopify's monthly ratio as chargebacks received divided by eligible transactions, including disputes later won. Keep its definition separate from a simple count divided by all orders and check current monitoring rules.

## The steps

1. **Make the statement descriptor recognizable.** In payment settings, use the store or domain name and supported contact details. If an international intermediary collects the payment, verify what the customer actually sees on their statement.
2. **Review risk before shipping.** Inspect Shopify's order-risk information and the relevant abandoned or blocked payment views available in your account. Balance avoided fraud against false declines; a risk label calls for a defined action rather than automatic cancellation of every unusual order.
3. **Document the promise.** Align product descriptions, delivery commitments and returns with reality. Keep a version of the product page and accepted terms as they appeared at purchase, useful for “not as described” disputes.
4. **Keep delivery evidence.** Use tracking and confirmation. Select any signature requirement according to basket risk, product and carrier service; it is not a universal legal threshold. Be able to retrieve evidence quickly.
5. **Build a reason-specific response.** Shopify can supply order and transaction context; add the most direct relevant evidence first, then customer correspondence and the accepted policy. An independent check of Stripe's Visa Compelling Evidence 3.0 documentation confirms specific qualifying criteria: Visa reason code 10.4, at least two paid undisputed prior transactions using the same payment method 120–364 days earlier, and the required matching evidence combination. It is not a general defense for every returning customer or dispute.
6. **Refund promptly when owed.** Resolve legitimate refund obligations early. Once a dispute is open, follow the provider's workflow before separately refunding, to avoid conflicting or duplicate reimbursement. Log the operational cause so it can be fixed.

## The pitfall

Calling all disputes “fraud” encourages tighter filters that reject good customers without reducing delivery or refund complaints. Read the reasons first. The source says Shopify groups disputes into eight reasons; confirm current reporting categories rather than building a permanent workflow around a fixed count.

Shopify's [current Protect eligibility guidance](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shop-pay/shopify-protect/protect-order-with-shopify-protect?ref=conversion.club), checked October 29, 2026, requires a US business location and US Shopify Payments account. Protection is limited to eligible orders and covered fraudulent chargebacks, subject to its fulfillment and tracking conditions. It is not worldwide protection or a substitute for handling delivery and refund disputes.

Record losses consistently in [order contribution](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-you-calculate-the-contribution-margin-of-an-order/), alongside [return costs](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-much-does-a-return-really-cost/) and [payment costs](https://conversion.club/playbook/shopify-total-cost-payment-fees/). Include lost product cost, fees and recovery expenses without double-counting the reversed revenue and its accounting effect.

## What to tell your team

> “We received 18 disputes on 4,200 orders: 11 concerned missing parcels and four fraud. We propose signatures above $150 for this store's risk profile, and better delivery evidence before tightening fraud filters.” These figures and threshold are fictional, not a recommended global rule.
