# How should I sell samples, minis and discovery kits?

- Description: Price the delivered trial, control the later credit and measure full-size conversion over months. A profitable kit alone does not prove profitable acquisition.

A paid discovery kit, credited against a later full-size order, can make trial more sustainable than indiscriminate free sampling. Price it using the complete delivered cost and model the later credit as well. A kit that covers its own shipment is not automatically a free acquisition channel: advertising, overhead, redemption and returns still matter.

## The benchmark

Someone searching for “free samples” may primarily want something without paying. For the brand, the useful questions are how many trials lead to full-size purchases, how quickly and with what contribution.

A niche fragrance brand observed by the authors sold 5 ml samples representing about one-third of unit volume but 9% of revenue; sets represented about one-quarter of units and 14% of revenue. Its roughly €40 discovery box of around 10 extracts, redeemable against a large bottle, sold several hundred units monthly, mostly to new customers. The important next measure was conversion to a bottle, not kit revenue alone.

Bawa and Shoemaker's 2004 research identifies three sampling effects: accelerating purchases that would have happened anyway, replacing paid trials and recruiting buyers who would otherwise not purchase. The third represents newly recruited demand; the net commercial effect also depends on the other effects and costs. Effects remained visible up to 12 months later and varied by brand. A two-week view can miss the outcome.

| Format | Purpose | Cost bearer | Outcome to track |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Sample inside an existing order | Introduce another product to an acquired customer | Brand | Later purchase of the sampled product |
| Paid mini or threshold gift | Discovery and basket building | Buyer, or brand when gifted | Order value and subsequent full-size purchase |
| Paid discovery kit with later credit | Acquisition through trial | Buyer initially; brand funds redemption | Redemption, full-size timing and cohort contribution |

## The rule

Include contents, packaging and shipping in the kit cost, then add acquisition and operational costs to the cohort model. If the customer returns, the full-size order must support the credit as well as its own costs. A mini priced below the full-size product per milliliter can encourage existing buyers to choose the less profitable format; check the economics rather than copying a standard ratio.

Choose free samples deliberately. The fragrance brand acknowledged selecting them somewhat randomly. A nearby product in a range the buyer already understands is a more testable rule than clearing whatever sample stock is closest.

The source compares these Shopify mechanisms using documentation reviewed in October 2026:

| Feature | Store credit | Kit-buyer discount code |
| ------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Creation | Customer record or Admin API | Eligible customer segment and order discount |
| Customer use | Supported customer-account or Shop Pay authentication | Code entered at checkout; eligibility still applies |
| Sharing risk | Balance attached to customer | Code can leak; segment and one-per-customer rules reduce misuse |
| Accumulation | Balances can add together | Limit uses explicitly |
| Costs | Source cites third-party transaction-fee treatment for stores created on or after May 12, 2025 | No separate discount fee cited; payment costs still exist |

Recheck plan, gateway and country terms before choosing. A code and a monetary balance are not interchangeable accounting objects.

## The steps

1. **Build a coherent kit.** Three to five minis can cover a routine, with instructions on what to try first and which full-size item follows. The source fragrance example contains more; the count is a design choice. At a skincare brand, the discovery set's add-to-cart rate was 21.5%, versus 29.1% overall and 77.6% for travel size. Those observed differences justify auditing its page, not assuming format caused them.
2. **Price the full journey.** Use the [contribution-margin method](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-you-calculate-the-contribution-margin-of-an-order/) for the shipped kit and later redeemed order. Include the expected share of buyers who would have purchased full size anyway.
3. **Issue a controlled benefit.** The source proposes issuing at fulfillment, with a clearly disclosed period such as 60 days, subject to applicable credit and consumer rules. Notify the customer. An illustrative Shopify segment is `products_purchased MATCHES (id = 2012162031638, date BETWEEN -90d AND today)`; replace the ID and validate current syntax. A proposed Flow triggered by “Order fulfilled” could call `storeCreditAccountCredit` through “Send Admin API request.” This is a route to test, not a ready-made verified automation; prevent repeat credits and handle cancellations.
4. **Guide the next purchase.** Send usage help around receipt and a relevant selection reminder before a permitted expiry, with the [second-purchase timing](https://conversion.club/playbook/when-and-how-to-trigger-the-second-purchase/) matched to the product and applicable messaging permissions.
5. **Follow cohorts for months.** Track redemption, time to full size, second-order value and combined contribution against an appropriate non-kit path. Selection differences mean an unrandomized comparison remains observational.

## The pitfall

The fragrance brand encountered stacked vouchers, scraped public codes and shoppers using a second-order code before canceling the first. Controls included one benefit per customer, buyer-segment eligibility and issuing at shipment. Because credit balances accumulate, the rule must operate per person, not simply per purchased kit.

Also monitor outstanding credit liabilities. The source names Shopify's “Outstanding store credit balance” finance report. An expiry is not a substitute for lawful terms and accurate accounting; do not assume every market permits the same treatment.

## What to tell your team

> “The kit sells for $15 and costs $11 delivered. Of buyers, 41% redeem within 60 days on a $58 order. We will evaluate combined contribution before shifting budget from routine free samples.” All figures are fictional.
