Always show a next step: [a back-in-stock alert](https://conversion.club/how-to-optimize-ecommerce-site-search-the-complete-audit/), a date if you know it, and the closest alternative. An out-of-stock page should never be a dead end.

## The benchmark

Count the visits that land on unavailable product pages, and what happens to them. If they leave the site, you may be paying for ads that send people to a closed door.

In session recordings, the signal is plain to see: someone clicks five or six times in a row on a grayed-out size, as if the button might give way.

Also check what your theme is saying. On a premium footwear brand's site, every shoe size on the product page carried the screen-reader text "variant sold out or unavailable," even for the sixteen sizes in stock out of seventeen.

Nobody had noticed, and it took an audit to catch it: the text only shows up for screen readers and search engines, which take it at its word.

## The rule

[Every out-of-stock state offers an action](https://conversion.club/the-r-in-cro-respect-2-3/). [When a size is missing](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-does-a-size-guide-reduce-hesitation-and-returns/), the alert applies to that size; when the product is sold out and a restock is planned, the page gives the date and offers the alert; when the product is discontinued, it points to its replacement.

And an alert isn't always enough, as a project lead on our team pointed out at a project kickoff: "You're never going to come back to the site as soon as it's in stock, even if you get the notifications."

She suggested [letting people add the sold-out product to their cart](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-you-sell-on-pre-order-without-letting-customers-down/), so all they have to do is check out when it comes back.

## The steps

1. The grid. Show [available sizes right on the collection page](https://conversion.club/how-to-optimize-an-e-commerce-collection-page-the-complete-audit/).
2. The alert. Add an email alert on every unavailable variant. Shopify doesn't send it natively: use either an app or a Shopify Flow workflow triggered by "product variant back in stock," which emails only the people who signed up.
3. The date. Give it when it's reliable.
4. The alternatives. Offer two or three hand-picked ones, not an automatic carousel.
5. Advertising. [Turn off ads that point to a sold-out product](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-to-match-your-landing-page-to-your-ad/).

A line to give your leadership, in your own words: "No product page ends on a gray button. Every stockout offers an alert, a date or a replacement, and we read signups as an order book."

---

## The trap

Hiding sold-out products looks clean, and that's the trap. The page disappears, links from your emails and ads land on an error, and your SEO loses a page that had built up age.

[Keep the page live](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-i-optimize-my-product-page-for-google-shopping/); for a discontinued product, since late 2025 Shopify offers an "unlisted" status that keeps the URL alive while removing it from collections and search engines. And treat your alert signups as commercial data.

At an accessories brand, the team put it this way in its own hypothesis log:

> "Today, a sold-out product is a dead page, and the visitor leaves without a trace. An email field in the right spot [turns a total loss into a warm lead](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-to-collect-emails-without-offering-a-discount/), and the signup volume helps prioritize restocks."
