- Description: Use genuine variant identifiers consistently across the store, feeds and structured data. Source new codes through the relevant GS1 organization, with local fees.

GTINs help platforms recognize that listings describe the same trade item. An EAN-13 barcode encodes a thirteen-digit GTIN commonly used in Europe; GTINs also have other valid lengths. Accurate identifiers and consistent brand data make product matching less ambiguous, but a code does not guarantee visibility in Google or an AI assistant.

## The benchmark

Each distinct sellable size/color variant generally needs its own identifier. Publishing the identical item on two pages does not create two trade items. The source reviewed these platform references on October 20, 2026:

| Channel | Identifier treatment in the cited documentation | Brand |
| -------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Google Merchant Center | Submit the manufacturer's assigned GTIN; use appropriate alternative identifiers when none exists | Recommended as applicable |
| Shopify Google & YouTube channel | Enter an assigned barcode; otherwise check brand/manufacturer-part-number requirements | Required in the cited no-GTIN case |
| OpenAI product feed | GTIN optional if none was assigned; do not invent one | Follow the current schema |
| Shopify Catalog | Barcode is useful product information, not listed as a universal eligibility condition in the cited source | Vendor contributes a brand signal |
| Google merchant structured data | Use the most specific appropriate GTIN property | Recommended where applicable |

The current OpenAI product-file reference opened for this review distinguishes discovery, ads, and checkout requirements. Use its supported schema rather than assuming one field list grants eligibility in all three contexts.

Shopify Engineering's June 2026 clustering description discusses titles, options, and Vendor. The source notes it does not mention barcode in that passage. That supports maintaining consistent text signals; it does not establish that a brand string has quantitatively equal ranking weight to GTIN. See the [agent-readable catalog guide](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-i-get-my-catalog-ready-for-purchases-through-chatgpt-and-google/).

GS1’s English guidance says to obtain GS1 GTINs through a GS1 member organization. Choose the relevant organization and obtain its actual terms rather than importing a fee table from another country. Use this allocation checklist:

| Question | What to confirm |
| ----------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Who controls the identifiers? | The brand owner or authorized allocation process |
| Which items need distinct numbers? | Each genuinely different sellable variant |
| How many identifiers are needed? | Current variants and planned additions |
| What does the local agreement cost? | Entry, ongoing and service charges in the actual quote |
| Which currency and taxes apply? | The member organization’s stated billing basis |
| Can ownership be checked? | The licensed business and product assignment |
| What happens to existing codes? | Preserve valid assigned identifiers during migration |

The checklist is a purchasing and data-governance aid, not a claim that every GS1 organization uses the same pricing model.

## The rule

If you make products distributed across retailers and marketplaces, evaluate identifiers through the relevant GS1 member organization and the channels' actual requirements. Obtain the member organization’s actual allocation and licensing terms before budgeting; neither a convenient example amount nor another country’s tariff establishes your cost.

For other brands' products, use the manufacturer's real assigned GTIN from authoritative product information or packaging. Selling only through your own store does not by itself establish a legal obligation to buy codes; platform and distribution requirements still matter. Never invent a number to remove a warning.

## The steps

1. **Audit existing codes.** Export Shopify products and barcode values. Flag missing codes, duplicates across genuinely different variants, lengths other than eight, twelve, thirteen, or fourteen digits, and invalid check digits. The [GS1 calculator](https://www.gs1.org/services/check-digit-calculator?ref=conversion.club) checks the final digit. Investigate restricted-circulation prefixes; the source identifies 2, 02, and 04 as problematic for Google, so check the current channel specification before accepting them.
2. **Assign to actual variants.** Use your licensed allocation process, prioritizing bestsellers. The same item shown in separate men's and women's listings keeps one identifier; a Club accessories brand had to choose a canonical reference page for that duplicate presentation.
3. **Populate consistently.** Set the barcode on each Shopify variant and standardize Vendor spelling. Do not claim case alone necessarily creates a separate machine entity; consistent values reduce avoidable ambiguity. Verify feeds send GTIN rather than an internal SKU in its place.
4. **Handle genuine absence.** Supply brand and manufacturer part number where appropriate. Set Google's `identifier_exists` to `no` only when relevant unique identifiers genuinely do not exist under its current rules. Handmade and one-off goods are examples, not a permission to suppress an assigned code.
5. **Check output.** Review Merchant Center warnings and validate [structured data](https://conversion.club/playbook/product-page-structured-data/). Use `gtin13` for a thirteen-digit identifier and the appropriate property for other lengths. Align page and feed values; see the [Shopping guide](https://conversion.club/playbook/how-do-i-optimize-my-product-page-for-google-shopping/).

## The pitfall

Cheap resold codes can carry licensing or prior-assignment problems. GS1 Australia’s English FAQ warns that resold numbers are not managed by GS1 and that uniqueness is not guaranteed after resale. Check ownership and channel acceptance rather than assuming a syntactically valid number is yours to use.

A Club textile-accessories audit found a genuine thirteen-digit assigned code placed in `mpn` by an SEO app, with GTIN absent from the documented product-level markup. The proposed template correction was estimated at one hour. That is a case estimate, not a universal implementation promise.

## What to tell your team

This proposal is fictional:

> “One hundred forty of our 410 variants lack a valid identifier. We will confirm allocation rights and local fees, then fix codes and feed mappings over three weeks, beginning with bestsellers. We will measure validation errors rather than promise AI placement.”
