How can your store appear in Google AI Mode?

Short answer

Keep product pages indexable and useful, synchronize Merchant Center data, and answer real purchase questions. No special AI markup guarantees inclusion.

The answer in detail

No setting guarantees entry into Google AI Mode. Eligible indexed pages can be considered, and product discovery also depends on accurate Merchant Center information. For a store, the practical work is consistent product pages and feeds that answer detailed buying questions.

The benchmark

Google’s English Search Central guidance describes AI features as an extension of ordinary Search eligibility and content fundamentals. The practical implication is to make detailed product facts available to shoppers and search systems, while recognizing that being eligible does not guarantee inclusion in a particular answer.

Google's cited guidance Practical implication
No additional AI Mode requirements Ordinary SEO fundamentals still matter
Indexed and snippet-eligible pages Check exclusion directives and actual eligibility
Structured data should match visible information Markup cannot replace missing product facts
No special AI-only file or markup Avoid building a separate robot-only content layer
Keep Merchant Center current Align catalog facts with the store
AI traffic included in Web performance Do not treat Web clicks as isolated AI clicks

Google's Shopping Graph receives merchant data through Merchant Center. Inspect category and market availability rather than assuming every Shopping feature is present for every customer.

The Merchant Center question_and_answer primary help checked for this review confirms an optional attribute usable in all countries, intended especially for conversational experiences such as AI Mode. It permits up to thirty repeated question-answer pairs, within the documented size limits. Using it does not guarantee a citation or placement.

Current Shopify Google-channel help, checked on October 29, 2026, says direct checkout is rolling out to eligible customers in the United States, Canada, and Australia, while the merchant can be based in any country. It requires the specified Merchant Center, catalog, policy, and terms setup. Customers without access complete checkout on the store. Discovery and direct-checkout eligibility are separate; do not treat the original US-only snapshot as the current worldwide rule.

The rule

Treat AI Mode as a more conversational search experience drawing on product pages and feeds. Contradictory price, stock, materials, or delivery facts undermine usefulness.

Write for the detailed question. “Fragrance-free serum for oily skin under $40, delivered before Friday” includes multiple criteria. The USD budget is fictional: use the shopper's market currency and a genuinely supportable delivery promise. In one Club jewelry example, strong main-keyword rankings did not extend to specific queries because relevant subcollections and explicit supporting text were missing. That field observation does not prove a guaranteed AI ranking tactic.

The steps

  1. Check inclusion. Use Search Console URL Inspection on main products and collections. Inspect noindex, nosnippet, restrictive snippet limits, and the Search generative AI control. Google's primary control help checked for this review describes the exclusion across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative Discover.
  2. Enable appropriate listings. Confirm Merchant Center free-listing eligibility, country-specific shipping requirements, titles, and identifiers. Review the target countries and shipping setup required for the programs you actually use. Use the Shopping product-page guide.
  3. Add genuine questions. For twenty bestsellers, start with three to five support-derived pairs under question_and_answer. Follow Google's current content restrictions, including avoiding prices, dates, keyword lists, and repeated title/description copy in this attribute. A fictional text-data example is "Does the set include a refill?":"Yes, one 50 ml refill is included.". Use the source-type-specific escaping and format.
  4. Complete visible facts. Provide use, material, dimensions, delivery, and returns in accessible page content. A Club shoe brand's markup omitted variant sizes and returns; its English category label was still French. Correct those contradictions before adding more schema. See the AI-citable product-page guide.
  5. Sample monthly. Ask ten to fifteen realistic purchase questions in the target market and language, using fresh sessions and a consistent account/location setup. Record mentions, competitors, and linked pages. A small panel is exploratory, not a precise market share; use the citation protocol.
  6. Read reporting carefully. The checked primary AI performance help dates worldwide availability to August 31, 2026. Use its impressions to locate exposed pages, ordinary Web reporting for aggregate clicks, and analytics for measured sales.

The pitfall

Generic FAQs pasted everywhere, robot-only files, and markup claiming invisible reviews do not replace useful facts. The llms.txt guide discusses that temptation. One contributor observed real-question FAQs appearing in AI answers, but had not measured the effect.

Excluding the site out of fear of lost clicks is also consequential: Google's control removes eligibility from the covered AI surfaces. Make that tradeoff deliberately rather than treating exclusion as a free SEO improvement.

What to tell your team

This scope and baseline are fictional:

“There is no guaranteed AI Mode recipe. Over three weeks we will align pages and feeds for twenty bestsellers, then track a consistent ten-question panel. Today, two questions mention one of our products.”
