Short answer
Put the return window, cost and method near the purchase decision. Align policy copy, store settings and feeds, separating local rights from optional benefits.
The answer in detail
A return policy reassures when it answers three questions in one line: how long, who pays and how to send the item back. Put that line near the size choice and buy button. Before offering free returns, make the current terms easy to understand; that improvement may require only clearer copy.
The benchmark
The source's October 2026 Baymard references report that 13% of abandonment-survey respondents cited an unsatisfactory return policy. Its product-page research says 60% look for return terms on product pages, while 44% of reviewed sites neither show nor link them there; separate footer research found 20% without a direct text return link. These findings have different samples and should not become one universal funnel.
At a premium apparel brand, the authors observed recordings in which shoppers hesitated between sizes, scrolled for return terms, returned to the selector and left. Exchange information existed below the buy button, where approximately 57% saw it. This was an audit observation, not an experiment; see the fashion Clarity patterns.
Statutory withdrawal rights and the store’s extra commercial policy are different. The EU’s English Your Europe guidance provides this regional example for eligible distance purchases; it is not a worldwide 14-day entitlement.
| Topic | EU example; detailed scope and exceptions apply |
|---|---|
| Withdrawal period | Generally 14 days; for goods, measured from delivery |
| Return postage | Generally buyer-paid unless the seller covers it or failed to disclose the cost |
| Examples of exceptions | Qualifying personalized goods, rapidly perishable goods and other listed contracts |
| Defective goods | Distinguish change-of-mind returns from the trader’s responsibility for defective-product return costs |
Specify the appropriate declaration, return and refund journey for each market. This summary does not import a France-specific withdrawal-button date, refund deadline or information-omission extension into international operating instructions. Those details require the applicable market’s own rules and interface implementation.
The rule
Write the short version first: “Free size exchanges. Returns within 30 days; return label $4.90.” This is a fictional US-dollar example, not a recommended fee.
The complete policy should explain the period and starting event; return and exchange charges; portal, address and shipping method; refund timing and method; exclusions; and any legally required withdrawal mechanism. Distinguish optional benefits from rights the store cannot remove. One children's clothing brand's terms merely linked a logistics portal, leaving the return address and payer unclear.
A longer window does not automatically increase postage on each parcel, but it can change return behavior and resale value. Free returns transfer shipping cost to the merchant. Free exchanges can retain revenue but still have fulfillment costs. Use actual return economics before selecting the policy.
Keep these four representations aligned:
| Location | Information to reconcile |
|---|---|
| Policy and product page | Window, fees, method and exclusions |
| Shopify return rules | Window, postage and final-sale settings, subject to applicable rights |
| Merchant Center | Return period, fees and method |
| Assistant product feed | Supported return flags, deadline and policy URL |
The source records optional OpenAI fields accepts_returns, return_deadline_in_days and return_policy in October 2026. Verify the current feed specification rather than assuming an omitted field will be inferred. Google documents how Merchant Center settings take precedence over MerchantReturnPolicy markup in relevant cases.
The steps
- Choose with real costs. Model the window, refunds, exchanges and exclusions against last year's returns, alongside market-specific minimum rights.
- Configure the store. In Shopify return rules, set the supported window and fees and review final-sale items. Settings do not write a complete policy or override statutory rights; reconcile the written text separately.
- Check withdrawal handling. For affected markets, validate the required declaration route, accessibility, confirmation and terms with the responsible legal owner. Do not impose a single country’s interface wording or commencement date on every market.
- Place the summary. Show it near size selection, repeat the essentials in cart and provide a footer “Return policy” link distinct from “Start a return.”
- Align machine-readable data. Match Merchant Center and assistant feeds to the actual policy and applicable destinations. Do not publish a single global fee if countries differ.
- Review three months. Track return rate, exchange share and contribution margin. If conversion and returns both rise, profit determines whether the change works.
The pitfall
“Free returns” in the banner, another promise in the FAQ and a stricter policy in the terms create disputes. A customer remembers the favorable message while support applies the restrictive one. Under the cited EU guidance, failure to disclose return costs can make the trader responsible; establish the requirement for the market concerned.
A 30-day benefit absent from a supported feed field may be unavailable to an assistant using that feed. That does not mean no assistant can read the page. Reduce avoidable returns upstream through the size guide and fashion return-rate work.
What to tell your team
“Free returns would cost an estimated $1.80 per order, or 2.1 margin points. We propose 30 days and free exchanges, visible near size selection and consistent across feeds, then a three-month review.” These figures are fictional.
