Short answer
Check each AI channel’s eligibility, product data and policies in Shopify. Discovery, enrollment and direct checkout are separate capabilities.
The answer in detail
For a Shopify merchant, the first agentic-commerce task is usually account configuration and catalog quality. Check which channels your store qualifies for, which products are eligible and whether your policies are complete. Discovery, referral and direct checkout are different capabilities.
The benchmark
Shopify's agentic-storefront documentation describes product discovery through Shopify Catalog and controls under Sales channels > Agentic. Merchant location alone does not determine every channel's availability. Buyer destination, product eligibility, payment setup, plan and channel requirements also matter.
The source's October 2026 channel snapshot should be read as a dated operational reference:
| Channel | Checkout distinction | Eligibility to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Merchant's online-store checkout, in an in-app browser or new tab | Current documentation requires selling to US customers; the business can be elsewhere |
| Google AI Mode / Gemini | Direct checkout may be available when supported and activated | Merchant location, Merchant Center connection and buyer destination |
| Microsoft Copilot | Channel-specific direct-checkout capability | Store, buyer and payment requirements |
| Meta | Supported Meta surfaces and checkout settings | Facebook/Instagram setup, product synchronization and served markets |
The original source named specific North American markets for those channels. Do not turn that snapshot into a permanent worldwide availability list. Review current help pages and the account itself. Shopify's Agentic plan also has different defaults, including direct checkout being off by default; a setting described for an existing Shopify store may not apply to every plan.
The Shopify developer MCP tools serve agent developers. A merchant using Shopify's supported channel integration does not need to build its own protocol server simply to inspect these controls. Eligibility still does not guarantee placement in an assistant's answer.
The rule
Treat channel participation as an explicit commercial decision, then improve product eligibility. Turning off a channel's Catalog access is different from blocking web crawlers or removing a product from the store.
The source's Catalog checklist includes a public storefront, published products with titles, images, positive prices and product URLs, and eligible categories. Some categories are excluded. Confirm the current requirements and plan access before treating a product as eligible.
GTIN is a separate issue. Its absence from one Catalog checklist does not waive Merchant Center's identifier rules. Supply valid manufacturer-assigned identifiers where applicable; never invent a barcode to clear an error. See catalog preparation.
The steps
- Inspect Sales channels > Agentic. Record which channels can access the Catalog, which are enabled and which have direct checkout available. The source describes “Allow Shopify to manage for me” and “Auto enroll new storefronts”; verify current controls and defaults. Channel sharing changes may take time to propagate.
- Complete Settings > Policies: terms, privacy, returns/refunds and shipping. These must describe real operations. Do not copy a template that promises unsupported shipping or return rights.
- Review listing diagnostics. Where the account offers Listing insights, test a realistic customer query and inspect descriptions, images, verified reviews, variants, stock and policy completeness. Fix missing categories first. “Color 04” communicates less than “Black”; use meaningful variant names and a clear product page.
- Check compare-at prices before sharing them. A channel displaying a crossed-out price can amplify an inaccurate promotion. Apply the destination's price-reduction rules. For EU-covered price-reduction announcements, the general prior-price rule refers to the lowest price over at least the preceding 30 days, with permitted exceptions and national implementation. It is not a worldwide pricing rule.
- Assess Shopify Knowledge Base if available. It supplies FAQ information for AI services and provides usage information; it is not necessarily the FAQ visible to shoppers. The App Store listing checked October 29, 2026 lists English as the supported language. Check suitability for the shopper languages and operations your store serves.
- Measure referred sales with the GA4 method and separately test brand visibility. Available products, agent questions and completed orders are different measures.
The pitfall
Changing a product to Unlisted can affect its presence in sitemaps and store discovery beyond one AI channel. Use the appropriate channel control if the goal is simply to stop sharing with that channel. Verify the consequences before editing product status in bulk.
One women's fashion account described by the contributors showed 174 products available to ChatGPT, about 250 agent questions over 30 days and €255 in sales. These are modest, specific account observations. They do not establish that every product was recommended or that every agent question produced a customer session.
A jewelry founder in the source assumed a connected store meant active distribution. Inspect channel status and product eligibility rather than equating a connection with placement, and do not infer that ChatGPT purchases happen in a native checkout.
What to tell your team
“In this fictional audit, 420 products are shared through eligible Shopify channels, but 37 lack categories and our shipping policy is incomplete. We propose two days to fix the data, then verify destination eligibility and actual referred sales before expanding the channel.”
